Pavement Training

This course introduces the functional requirements of pavement for different purposes, including streets, roads, highways, and bicycle/pedestrian paths, and the types of pavement that can meet those functional requirements. The class provides a basic understanding of how pavement materials, structural design, construction, and asset management interact to affect pavement performance for each pavement type. The class covers all of the pavement distresses occurring in California within the context of the various climate regions and traffic conditions in the state. This knowledge framework is important for making well-informed decisions regarding materials and construction specifications and their enforcement, and treatment selection and timing. This is the primary introductory course in the pavement engineering and management training program offered by the City and County Pavement Improvement Center the CCPIC in partnership with TechTransfer.

This course will introduce definitions and metrics for assessing and improving the sustainability of pavements across the life cycle using the concept of life cycle thinking. Strategies and approaches for different stages of the life cycle, different contexts, and differing goals of agencies will be discussed. Cost and social considerations will also be discussed. Expected future changes in tools, technologies, and policies for improving sustainability, and considerations to help assure that proposed changes have a high probability of improving sustainability will be presented. Pavement networks are often the most valuable asset that an agency owns. This asset is not only expensive to replace, but it is an essential component to the traveling public's safety. Agencies are looking for more cost-effective ways to perform engineering, maintenance, management, and rehabilitation of roadways more than ever before to stretch funding allocations. A pavement management system is an essential tool to assist in cost-effective roadway maintenance planning. This is the primary overview course on pavement management systems and preservation strategies in the training certificate program offered by the City and County Pavement Improvement Center (CCPIC) in partnership with TechTransfer.

This course will provide a more detailed understanding of the construction inspection and associated material testing of fog seals, slurry seals, microsurfacing, and chip seals. The instructor will discuss the production of emulsions, the basics of the composition and application of each treatment, equipment used for application and its operation, agency quality assurance, contractor quality control, inspection, material testing, and associated daily documentation. Illustrations and numerous photos are shown and discussed as well as example calculations. This is a core course offered by the City and County Pavement Improvement Center CCPIC in partnership with TechTransfer. Completion of this course is required for participants who wish to work towards earning the Pavement Construction Inspection Certificate.

This course discusses in detail the State funding sources and allocation formulas for cities and counties, SB 1, and cash flow analysis and comparison to road network funding needs based on capital project and pavement management system information.

This course presents information regarding asphalt mix components and their relation to performance, and takes participants through the asphalt mix design methodologies used by the State and local agencies in California. The course covers both Hveem and Superpave mix designs, as well as open-graded mix design. This is the primary overview course on Asphalt Concrete Materials & Mix Design in the training certificate program offered by the City and County Pavement Improvement Center (CCPIC) in partnership with TechTransfer.

This course presents information regarding construction contract documents, quality assurance as applied to pavement construction, construction specifications for the components of pavement structural sections, and preparation of specifications, special provisions, and estimates. This is the primary overview course on pavement construction in the training certificate program offered by the City and County Pavement Improvement Center (CCPIC) in partnership with TechTransfer.

This course will provide a more detailed understanding of the design and construction of concrete pavement mixtures. The instructor will discuss critical properties, testing, and construction considerations for concrete pavement, as well as each individual mixture ingredient. Concrete mixture design proportioning will be introduced with methods of optimizing concrete pavement mixtures for sustainability and durability. Additionally, construction considerations for optimal concrete pavement performance will also be discussed. Illustrations and numerous photos are shown and discussed as well as example calculations.
